When looking back at the series of decisions that lead to me being a teacher now. I can pinpoint a consistent driving factor: “A desire to connect with others meaningfully”. While on my own creative journey, I was introduced to the reality of the “War of Art”, and my allies in the trenches were the many teachers and mentors who helped me along the way. Those teachers and mentors became my heroes. The foundation they laid for helping others instilled in me a personal obligation or mission to help others in their creative endeavours. Now an educator/practitioner and on my PGCert journey, I would say my teaching style could be currently classified as a sage on the stage.
I believe learning is acquiring knowledge or skills through study, experience or being taught. With that context in mind, I would say teaching is the process of imparting said knowledge and skills to students, with the goal of meeting student expectations.
Looking back at my life experiences and relationships with education, from behaviourism, an instructions-focused childhood to my teenage years that were summarised by much experimentation, learning by doing and then finally, my professional working years in the creative industry where social constructivism reigns and peer to peer learning is vital for survival.
My goal as a teacher is to equip students with the skills necessary to thrive in the creative workplace and inspire students to develop my shared passion for lifelong learning.
